What could be better than scoring a Wembley wonder goal ? How about a Wembley wonder goal against the team who rejected you as a kid.

That’s exactly what happened when Manchester City’s Dennis Tueart scored with an acrobatic overhead kick in the 1976 League Cup Final.

The opponents ? Newcastle United who turned him down when Tueart was just a kid. The goal and subsequent still images would go down as one of the most iconic scored at the old Wembley. A classic overhead kick goal at the most iconic stadium in the world. A photographers dream.

Tueart had already tasted Wembley success. He was part of a Sunderland team who had shocked Leeds United to win the 1973 FA Cup 1-0.

This time around he was part of an exciting City team that included players like England international Peter Barnes.

In fact it was Barnes (image below) who had given City the lead before Alan Gowling equalised with 10 minutes left of the first half.

Within a minute of the second half Tueart would score the goal that would eventually be the winner. And as a result bring the coveted League Cup back to Manchester.

At first there appeared to be little danger for Newcastle as City full-back Willie Donachie whipped in a hopeful cross from the left.

Even when Tommy Booth headed the ball back into the box there was no indication of what was to happen next.

As the ball looped into the heart of the Newcastle penalty area, Tueart leapt acrobatically into the air. His eyes fixed firmly on the ball he struck a perfectly-timed overhead kick . Newcastle keeper Mahony dived in vain as he ball nestled into the back of the net.

It was a goal worthy of winning any football match let alone a Cup Final.
