Two great footballing icons but from different eras and decades. Lionel Messi is the current king of the crop. A title once held by Diego Maradona. Many have wondered and dreamed of Messi and Maradona on the same team – how would they have fared? Would the opposition get a kick ??

The pair teamed up between 2008 and 2010. At the time Maradona managed the Argentina national team. But once they also teamed up for a game of football, albeit for charity.

In 2005, they played for the same team in a charity game with Messi aged just 18 and Maradona 45. It was a moment of recognition and realisation. Messi was the new King. But Maradona was “The Greatest”

During the game which also featured big name players like Juan Sebastian Veron, Juan Riquelme, Diego Simeone and Sergio Aguero both Messi and Maradona excelled.

Showing a chemistry born out of talent and ability they had a sixth sense on each other movement and positioning. It was like they had played together for ever.

At one point the pair combined brilliantly with a series of one-twos between them, as Maradona sets Messi up for what would have been a superb assist had the Barca man’s effort not been saved.

The old passing the baton to the new…..

On the discussion of whether Messi is as good, or better, than his fellow countryman, the Barca star once said, “Even if I played for a million years, I’d never come close to Maradona. Not that I’d want to anyway. He’s the greatest there’s ever been.”
