Ron Greenwood was a highly respected and successful football manager who made a significant impact on the sport during his career. Born in 1921 in Greenwich, London, Greenwood began his playing career as a right-back with West Ham United in 1939. He spent the majority of his playing career with the club, making over 200 appearances for the team and helping them win the FA Cup in 1964.

Leading them to the Second Division title in 1963 and the FA Cup in 1964. Greenwood also guided the team to a series of strong finishes in the First Division, including a third-place finish in 1968 and a fifth-place finish in 1970.

In 1977, Greenwood was appointed manager of the England national team, a position he held for six years. During his time in charge of the national team, he led England to the 1980 European Championship. There they reached the semi-finals, and the 1982 World Cup, where they reached the second round.

Greenwood was also credited with helping to develop a number of talented young players. These included Bryan Robson, Trevor Brooking, and Ray Wilkins, who went on to have successful careers at the highest level of the game.

Greenwood retired from football after the 1982 World Cup, with the national coach’s job going to Bobby Robson. One major landmark during Greenwood’s tenure was the selection of the first black player for England, Viv Anderson, in 1978.

Greenwood stated, “Yellow, purple or black – if they’re good enough, I’ll pick them”.

Throughout his career, Greenwood was known for his tactical acumen. Praised for his ability to get the best out of his players. He was highly respected by his players and colleagues alike and was considered one of the foremost tactical minds in the game.
